Here is an epic tutorial on creating a large explosion in 3DS Max using FumeFX.

As I said in the tutorial here are the values I used:

General Tab:
Spacing: 0.033m
Width: 5.0m
Length: 5.0m
Height: 10.0m

Simulation Tab:
Maximum Iterations: 30
Time Scale: Animated See Tutorial
Gravity: 1.0
Buoyancy: 1.5
Vorticity: 1.0
Velocity Damping: 0.0
X Turbulence: 0.1m

Turbulence Noise Section:
Scale: 0.05m
Detail: 5.0

Fuel Section:
Ignition: 100
Burn Rate: 20
Burn Rate Variation: 1.0
Heat Production: 60
Expansion: Animated, See Tutorial

Fire Creates Smoke: ENABLED

Smoke Section
Dissipation Min. Dens.: 1.0
Dissipation Strength: 10

Rendering Tab:

Smoke Section
Opacity: 30

Illumination Tab:
Multiple Scattering: ENABLED
Fire: 0.75
Smoke Strength: 0.05
Falloff: 9.0
